Schlingen der Angst is a 1947 film noir directed by Douglas Sirk with Claudette Colbert , Robert Cummings and Don Ameche .

action

Alison Courtland, a wealthy New Yorker, has no idea how she ended up on a train to Boston. When she calls her husband Richard, the police listen and learn from Richard that his wife threatened him with a gun. On a flight home, Bruce Elcott falls in love with the married but unhappy Alison. Her husband has Alison find Dr. Rhinehart, a psychiatrist. But it turns out that Rhinehart is not his real name. He is actually Charles Vernay, a Richard Courtland photographer who is having an affair with another woman, Daphne, and is hoping to get rid of Alison forever.

The plan is to drive Alison to suicide and inherit her money. Elcott arrives just in time to save Alison, who is apparently under hypnosis, from falling onto a balcony to her death. Elcott discovers that Vernay is the man who pretends to be the doctor. Meanwhile, Richard tries to drug Alison and get her to kill the doctor herself. Vernay finds out that he has been betrayed. Verney then shoots Richard and is later killed by falling through a skylight after being chased by Elcott. It seems Elcott and Alison live happily ever after.

criticism

"Psychological thriller with melodramatic accents, well played, excitingly staged and with atmospheric camera work."
