Quinhamel , sometimes also Quinhámel , is a city in northeast Guinea-Bissau . It is the capital of the Biombo region and the seat of the sector of the same name with an area of ​​451 km² and around 43,000 inhabitants.

Quinhamel is known for its beaches and its traditional towels. As in other coastal areas of Guinea-Bissau, grilled oysters are also considered a delicacy here, and chilled beer is usually drunk with it.

After the outbreak of civil war in Guinea-Bissau in 1998 , up to 100,000 people fled to the Quinhamel sector.

The Quinhamel sector has about 43,000 inhabitants. The predominant ethnic group are the Pepel (Portuguese papel ).

Economy and sights

Agriculture determines the economy in the Quinhamel sector, the most important products are mango , rice and cashews . The fishing in the Rio Mansôa should also be mentioned.

In the Destilaria do Manuel Português , a small Portuguese manufacturer in Quinhamel has been producing high-proof aguardentes all year round from the seasonal products sugar cane, honey and cashew nuts.

The Guinea-Bissau non-governmental organization ARTISSAL has been supporting the web tradition in the Quinhamel sector with its production facility Fábrica de tecelagem do Panu di Pinti since 2004 . The cooperative institution, committed to fair trade , produces the traditional scarves of the Pepel people who live here, which also have spiritual and ritual meanings for this strongly animist ethnic group.

The Hotel Mar Azul is close to Quinhamel Beach

The Museu Papel , also maintained by ARTISSAL, is a small ethnographic museum that is dedicated to the tradition and history of the local Pepel people.

The landscape in the sector, which is inviting for trekking and swimming, is little developed for tourism. The Hotel Mar Azul on the beach of Quinhamel is considered best-known hostel in the sector, while the Esplanada Omay can be considered as the most popular restaurant Quinhamels, especially for its buffets and its grilled oysters.
