action

The head of the Bergsternwarte Oberland, Professor Schott, found a new star when he looked through the telescope. He gives the heavenly body the name "Nova Hercules". His two collaborators are Dr. Gerellis, who has just returned from a vacation trip, and Dr. Alvens. Both men show more than professional interest in the new observatory assistant Dr. Aenne Bruck, who was hired by the professor during Gerellis' absence. Gabriele Schott, the professor's much younger wife, is unhappy in her marriage and has turned to Dr. Gerellis loves it. She is even ready to leave the respected head of the observatory for Gerellis and to divorce him. But he does not want to endanger his job or his good relationship with his boss and therefore does not go into more detail on Gabriele's advances. She in turn demands a divorce from her husband. The emotional entanglements in star operations mean that tensions soon arise between all the actors involved. Something monstrous happens: Professor Schott is found dead, cause of death: poisoning by potassium cyanide .

Meanwhile, operations continue. Astronomer Professor van Kempen has asked for a photograph of "Nova Hercules", but the endeavor fails due to the bad weather conditions currently prevailing. Dr. Alvens has meanwhile come to the conclusion that he cannot end up with Aenne and that Dr. Gerellis decided. But he is now suspected of murdering his boss, which suits Alvens when he begins to hate his rivals for the favor of Aenne. Meanwhile, a letter from Professor van Kempens arrives in which he thanks for the photography of "Nova Hercules". This raises new questions. Without the knowledge of everyone else, who has already taken a photograph of the new star and sent it to the renowned astronomer? In fact, Dr. Alvens as a villain. He had killed Prof. Schott, who had already photographed his discovery. Alvens is arrested and Aenne and Gerellis can now plan a future together.

Production notes

Rätsel der Nacht was one of the last German productions to be shot in the film studios of the occupied Netherlands (Amsterdam and The Hague). The recordings began in September 1944 and were probably completed before the end of the year. At the end of the war in 1945 the film was in music synchronization. It is unknown whether and when this film, which was taken over by the east zonal DEFA after 1945 , premiered in the GDR. A German premiere cannot be determined.

Arthur Kiekebusch was production manager. Herbert Nitzschke and Christian Hermann created the film structures.

Kirsten Heiberg sang the only song in the film, That stays between us .

criticism

Since a premiere planned for 1950 cannot be proven, there are no reviews either.
