The development of Río Blanco really got going when the textile factory opened on October 9, 1892 , which at the time was the largest of its kind in Latin America and where 1,700 workers (including 60 women) found a job.

Río Blanco soon became the focal point of the Mexican labor movement ; because there were always violent conflicts between the mostly local workers and the French factory owners. The conflict, which was sometimes violent, reached its climax on January 7, 1907 , when several workers were shot in an uprising. A memorial was erected in her memory on January 7, 1931, the 24th anniversary of the tragedy. Since then, celebrations in honor of the "martyrs of the workers' uprising of 1907" have taken place in Río Blanco every January 7th.
