The Río Chillon is a 126 km long tributary of the Pacific Ocean in western Peru in the Lima and Callao regions . It flows through the provinces of Canta and Lima in the Lima region .

River course

The Río Chillon rises in the Peruvian Western Cordillera . There it has its origin in a small lake about 4620  m high. From there it initially flows 14 km to the north-northwest before turning west for the next 17 km. On the rest of the river, the Río Chillón flows in a south-westerly direction through the mountains. The national road 20A ( Lima - Cerro de Pasco ) follows the course of the river. The river crosses the coastal plain for the last 20 kilometers. It flows through the northern suburbs of the capital Lima and finally flows into the Pacific Ocean on the northern outskirts of Callao .

Catchment area and hydrology

The catchment area of the Río Chillon extends over an area of ​​2303 km². It borders on that of the Río Chancay to the north and that of the Río Rímac to the south . The mean discharge is 6.9 m³ / s.
