The river lies for its entire length of 102 kilometers within the municipality of Puerto Villarroel and flows largely in a northeast direction. After a third of its walk, it reaches the city of Ivirgarzama and is already at almost the same height as at its mouth; on the remaining 68 kilometers the Río Ivirgarzama meanders very strongly, the river width on this stretch varies between 25 and 50 meters before it flows into the Río Ichilo a few kilometers north of the city of Puerto Villarroel .
