River course
The Río Telembí rises in the Colombian Western Cordillera at an altitude of about 3200 m , 10 km north of the Azufral volcano . The Río Telembí initially flows about 90 km in a north-northwest direction through the mountains. It then turns west and reaches the western Colombian coastal lowlands. At river kilometer 63 the Río Ñambí meets the Río Telembí coming from the south. At river kilometer 36 on the southern bank of the river lies the town of Barbacoas . 30 km above the mouth, the Guelmambí River meets the Telembí River when coming from the south. This then turns in a north-northwest direction. At river kilometer 18 the river passes the town of San José de las Lagunas on the west bank . Finally, the Telembí River meets the Patía River from the east.

The mean discharge of the Telembí River is 510.8 m³ / s. This makes it the tributary of the Río Patía with the most water. The catchment area covers an area of around 4500 km². It borders in the south on that of the Río Güiza , a tributary of the Río Mira , and in the east on that of the Río Guáitara .
