Röhrenfurth (noble family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Lords of Röhrenfurth were a now extinct, old Hessian knight family with ancestral seat in the village of Röhrenfurth on the Fulda , a few kilometers north of Melsungen . In Melsungen they owned a castle seat in the landgrave's castle.

At their headquarters, the Röhrenfurther secured an important ford across the river for the Landgraves of Hesse . Eckhard II von Röhrenfurth, the last male offspring of the family, and his brother Friedrich were deputies from 1418 and from 1422 until his death in 1432 successors to his father-in-law Rörich II von Eisenbach as Hereditary Marshal of Hesse . Eckhard was succeeded in this position by his son-in-law Herrmann II. Riedesel .

history

The sources on the Röhrenfurthern are incomplete. They become tangible for the first time with Bertoldus de Rornefort, who on November 30, 1182 in a document from Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa as guarantor ( fideisponsor ) for Landgrave Ludwig III. of Thuringia appears. Later Helmwich (1199), Helferich (1219-20) and Heinrich (died around 1200) are mentioned on the occasion of various notarizations; the latter was subdeacon and canon at St. Petri-Stift in Fritzlar .

In 1269 Wolrad von Rorenvort, with the consent of his wife and sons Wolrad and Hermann, sold his possessions in and near Röhrenfurth (the former places Alt- and Neu-Breitenbach) for 21 fine marks to the Eppenberg monastery near Gensungen .

The kemenate in Melsungen

Otto I was canon of Worms (Martinskirche) from 1339 to 1358 and dean of Rotenburg an der Fulda from 1361 to 1373 . He had a crescent moon and two stars in his seal. Otto took his retirement home in Melsungen and acquired income and possessions for this purpose. In 1339 Otto bought interest from Heinrich von Meysenbug's estate in Grebenau and in 1368 from Hermann and Tile von Falkenberg the tithe from Beiseförth, Rockenhusen (Rockenmühle an der Beise), Sneylbach (Schnegelshof between Beiseförth and Dagobertshausen). In 1358, the last year of his stay in Worms, Otto bought his brother Eckhard I's estate in Oberzwehren . With the income from this he donated a chapel with a bower in the Melsunger Cyllsgasse (today: Zülchsgässchen) behind the former castle seat of the von Röhrenfurth; the former bower, with an addition in 1601, is now the oldest residential building in Melsungen. In order to secure the chapel foundation after his death, Otto bound his relatives by contract. In 1357 Otto induced his brother Eckhard I, his wife Alheide and their sons Otto II and Eckhard II to renounce their paternal inheritance, but gave it to them for life in exchange for a low interest rate. In return they promised to leave him in possession of all his belongings. In 1373, probably after Eckhard I's death, the brothers Otto II and Eckhard II confirmed their uncle's chapel foundation.
