The Römersee is a lake in the former nature reserve of the same name near Heiden ( Borken district ). The NSG was designated in 1950 and had a size of 6.1 ha. Today the Römersee is mainly used as a settlement point for a campsite.
geography
The Römersee is located about 3 km north of the village of Heiden, on the edge of the mountain range Die Berge , which are part of the western Munsterland sand area. The K55, which leads from Heiden to Ramsdorf , runs on its west side . In the east there is a larger campsite and a weekend house area. The B67 runs north .
Origin and history
The pond , which is only about 1.50 m deep, probably emerged from a small raised bog that had formed in a depression and was later cleared. According to legend, the Römersee was created from the tears and sweat of the Romans who stopped here on their return from the Varus Battle .
Later, the camping site, which is still present today, was created on the edge of the nature reserve, a measure that was incompatible with the protection goal. Since the numerous visitors severely impaired the bank areas and the bathing operation could not be prevented, the district government in Münster finally refrained from renewing the protection ordinance. However, it was planned at the time to designate the Thesings Venneken sub-area again as a nature reserve, but this did not happen. In the current landscape plan of the Borken district, the latter is marked as a protected landscape component (Section 29 BNATSCHG).
flora
As recently as the 1950s, the Römersee was of one with juniper -covered heath surrounded by pine forests. The floristic treasures of the water included u. a. the flooding rush ( Isolepis fluitans ) and the narrow-leaved hedgehog ( Sparganium angustifolium ), which, according to Runge (1982) "was still present in quite a lot in 1973". A photo from the 1940s also shows large populations of fever clover ( Menyanthes trifoliata ) on the banks . The species could be observed by Wittig (1980) in 1979. In addition, the Römersee grew (according to Streusloff 1938):
- Cranberry ( Vaccinium oxycoccus )
- Grass hair ledges ( Trichophorum caespitosum )
- Round-leaved sundew ( Drosera rotundifolia )
- Bulky bulrush ( Juncus squarrosus )
- Narrow-leaved cottongrass ( Eriophorum angustifolium )
- Marsh blood eye ( Comarum palustre )
- Pennywort ( Hydrocotyle vulgaris )
- White Schnabelried ( Rhynchospora alba )
Thesings Venneken
A part of the area west of the street is called Thesings Venneken. It is a largely reforested area with pine trees that originally contained five small heather ponds . Here u. a .:
- Common cranberry ( Vaccinium oxycoccos ), according to Wittig as late as 1973
- Bell heather ( Erica tetralix )
- Gray sedge ( Carex canescens )
- Middle sundew ( Drosera intermedia )
- Scheidiges cottongrass ( Eriophorum vaginatum ), according to Wittig still 1979
- Narrow-leaved cottongrass ( Eriophorum angustifolium )
- Beaked sedge ( Carex rostrata )
- Swamp club moss ( Lycopodiela inundata )
- Marsh blood-eye ( Comarum palustre )
- Marsh violet ( Viola palustris )
