The mushrooms from the reddish relatives family (Entolomataceae) are a very species-rich group with more than 350 representatives in Central Europe. They stand out from other groups of fungi with their pink to pinkish-brown colored spore powder .
A clear determination of many species, especially in the genus mullet ( Entoloma ), is hardly possible without the help of a light microscope. Important distinguishing features are mostly special surface structures of the spores, the nature of the hat covering layer (hat skin), the shape of the cystids or the presence or absence of buckles .
The ecological amplitude of the representatives of the red deer relatives ranges from saprobiontic deadwood inhabitants to obligatory mycorrhizal fungi .
