Rüdiger Göbel (born December 27, 1940 in Berlin ; † July 28, 2014 in Essen ) was a German mathematician and university professor who is best known for his work on the border areas between algebra , model theory and axiomatic set theory .

Life

Göbel grew up in the German Democratic Republic after the division of Germany and came to West Germany with his parents in 1961, where he began studying mathematics and physics at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . In 1967 he did his doctorate with Reinhold Baer on a topic from group theory . He then worked as an assistant to Rolf Ebert at the Physics Institute of the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg , interrupted by a stay at the Center of Relativity Theory at the University of Texas at Austin . In 1974 he qualified as a physicist and mathematician in Würzburg.

Since 1975 Göbel was professor of mathematics at the newly founded University in Essen , which today forms the University of Duisburg-Essen together with the university founded at the same time in Duisburg . In Essen he turned back to group theory, with particular interest in the area of infinite Abelian groups. Inspired by a recent result from Saharon Shelah on a question about infinite Abelian groups, which made the dependence of mathematics on the underlying axiomatics of set theory clear to mathematicians in other areas, he turned his interest to this type of question as well.

Göbel published over 200 articles in mathematical journals. He has written many of them with co-authors, which shows that he is closely networked with mathematicians from all over the world. He organized a series of conferences with the particular aim of bringing together mathematicians in the fields of algebra and logic / model theory / set theory.

In teaching, Göbel had a talent for bringing young students into contact with current research at a very early stage in their studies. In addition to a number of students whom he referred to other mathematicians for doctorates , he himself had supervised 15 doctoral candidates.
