Lesley Selander

Lesley Selander (born May 26, 1900 in Los Angeles , California , † December 5, 1979 in Los Alamitos , California) was an American film and television director who turned mainly westerns in his 40-year career .

life and work

Lesley Selander's film career began in the early 1920s. As a teenager he worked as a laboratory technician; After a while he had a secure job and climbed the career ladder from cameraman to assistant director. As an assistant director, Selander worked on films such as Liebe nach Noten (The Cat and the Fiddle , 1934), The Marx Brothers in the Opera (A Night at the Opera , 1935), and Fritz Lang's Blinde Wut (Fury , 1936).

During his career as a director from 1936 to 1968, Selander worked on over 127 feature films and 15 television series. He mainly shot westerns in the B-movie sector, but his professionalism and enthusiasm made him an A-movie director.

When the b-western market died, Selander, like many other b-movie directors, turned to television. There he worked on series such as Lassie (1955–1959) and At the foot of the Blue Mountains (Laramie , 1959–1963). With a few aging western stars, Selander shot a few westerns for producer AC Lyles in the middle and towards the end of the 1960s .

Selander was also known by the names Leslie Selander, RL Selander, Lester Selander, Les Selander, R. Lesley Selander, and R. Leslie Selander.

Lesley Selander retired in 1968. He died on December 5, 1979 at the age of 79 in Los Alamitos, California. His grave is in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale , California.
