The R 517 (the Cyrillic P corresponds to the Latin R ) is an 18-kilometer regional road in the Russian Oblast Kaliningrad ( Königsberg region (Prussia) ). It connects the A 229 trunk road (here part of the former German Reichsstrasse 1 , today also Europastrasse 28 ) with the R 508 trunk road and provides a short connection to the two cities of Chernyachovsk ( Insterburg ) and Osjorsk ( Darkehmen , 1938–1946 Angerapp ). On its short route, it runs through the Chernyakhovsk district ( Insterburg district ) and the Osjorsk district ( Darkehmen district ( Angerapp )).
The R 517 runs on the route of the former Reichsstraße 137 , which covers a distance of 152 kilometers between Groß Skaisgirren (1938–1946 Kreuzingen , since 1946: Bolshakowo) and Insterburg (Tschernjachowsk) with Darkehmen (1938–1946 Angerapp , since 1946: Osjorsk) , Goldap (since 1945 Polish: Gołdap) and Suwalki (1941–1944 Sudauen , since then Suwałki).
