The Route 5 is a highway in Jordan . It runs in a north-south direction through the Arabian desert and is 420 km long. It begins on Route 10 in the northeast of the country and ends on the border with Saudi Arabia at El Mudawwara .

Street description

Route 5 begins about 120 kilometers east of Amman near Safawi on Route 10, the road from Irbid to Baghdad . Prince Hasan Airbase is located south of the intersection . The road is single-lane and leads south through the barren stone desert. There are only two villages on the route for the first 50 kilometers. South of Azraq ed Duruz there is double numbering with route 30 which leads from Zarqa towards the Saudi border. At a junction with Route 30 after approx. 25 kilometers, the route continues south again. Route 5 comes within less than 20 kilometers of the Saudi border. There is no place of greater importance along the route. The city of Maʿan is an exception , the road is led to the city to the west, crosses Route 15 there and leads back to the east, before continuing south to the border with Saudi Arabia. On the Saudi side, the road continues as Route 15 to Tabuk and Medina .

history

Route 5 is important because the northern part in particular takes up traffic from Amman to Baghdad. The southern part is of minor importance, although it is one of the few routes into Saudi Arabia. Since there are no other roads in the east of Jordan, there is still particular importance for traffic to Medina and Mecca . Due to the low traffic density, the route is not built like a motorway, but the route is completely paved .
