Radel clay
The Radel-Thon is a signposted cycle route around the Baden-Württemberg state capital Stuttgart .
The Radel-Thon goes back to an initiative of the former America House (today the German-American Center ). It was realized in cooperation with the state capital Stuttgart, the AOK Stuttgart-Böblingen, the Stuttgart cycling community and the ADFC . He combines private initiative with social commitment. To this day, various organizations hold a Radel-Thon day every year in mid-June, on which all kilometers driven on the Radel-Thon route are paid for by various sponsors.
So-called thons are already a tradition in the USA . Derived from the marathon, they are organized in many locations across the United States each year. Thons are not competitions that are about victory and price. It's all about participating. The Stuttgart Radel-Thon-Tag goes back to this basic idea.
The distance
The Radel-Thon route runs around 80 km around the Stuttgart basin . She was chosen by the former professional cyclist and German champion Reinhold Steinhilb . The signposted circular route leads over forest paths, bike paths and side roads with little traffic and offers a lot of variety and scenic beauty with vineyards, lakes and forests. It is a demanding and sporty tour. An experienced cyclist can do it in one day. But it can also be used in smaller stages. It is signposted in both directions.
At the Seilerwasen in Stuttgart Bad Cannstatt (the official start and finish point of the route) at 220 m above sea level. NN and at the highest point, on the Rohrer Höhe with almost 520 m above sea level. NN, information boards were installed. They provide information about the course and the altitude profile. They also show where it is cheap to get on the route or, if your legs no longer want to, which S-Bahn or light rail you can change to.
From Bad Cannstatt, the signs lead along the Neckar to Münster and Mühlhausen (lowest point on the route, approx. 211 m above sea level). It continues via Zazenhausen up to Stammheim and via Neuwirtshaus and Korntal to Weilimdorf . From Weilimdorf you drive up steeply through Lindental and then through the red and wild boar park and past the Neuer See to the Katzenbacher Hof . From there over the Rohrer Höhe to Möhringen and over Fasanenhof down into the Körschtal . Continue via Steckfeld and Asemwald to Birkach . Through the Ramsbachtal and Schönberg it goes up to Sillenbuch and then there is a steep descent down to Rohracker and Hedelfingen . From Hedelfingen we go back to the Neckar valley. It goes through Obertürkheim and Untertürkheim , past the Cannstatter Wasen , back to the starting point of the tour in Bad Cannstatt.
There are contradicting information about the height profile. The VVS cycle route planner indicates a total gradient of 694 m; GPS-Tour.info indicates 799 m; a local sports club that runs the route as a guided tour even speaks of 860 m.
