The long-distance cycle route Hamburg-Rügen leads on detours, sometimes almost in zigzag, over a length of around 520 kilometers from the Hanseatic city of Hamburg to the largest island in Germany, Rügen . That is about twice as far as the more direct route on small and medium-sized roads that are good for cycling from Hamburg to Stralsund (Rügen dam) via Lübeck , Wismar and Rostock .

The long-distance cycle route leads through the federal states of Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . A national park , three biosphere reserves and three nature parks are on the route .

From Geesthacht you reach Lauenburg at the confluence of the Elbe-Lübeck Canal . The further route leads via Büchen to Mölln. This is followed by Ratzeburg and the Schaalsee biosphere reserve . On the further route are Gadebusch, Schwerin, the Döpe nature reserve and the Sternberger Seenland nature park . The route to Putbus and Sassnitz on the island of Rügen runs via Güstrow and Stralsund .
