Rafał Augustyn (composer)

Rafał Augustyn (born August 28, 1951 in Wroclaw ) is a Polish composer, music and literary critic.

From 1971 to 1974 Augustin studied composition with Ryszard Bukowski at the State Music Academy in Wroclaw . From 1975 to 1978 he continued his education at the Katowice Music Academy with Henryk Mikołaj Górecki . At the same time, he studied Polish Studies at the University of Wroclaw from 1969 to 1974 . From 1973 he worked in the Department of Cultural Theory and Performing Arts of the Institute of Polish Philology at the University. 1979-80 he taught Polish at Stony Brook University .

From 1980 to 1998 Augustyn was a member of the Warsaw Autumn Program Committee . With Marek Pijarowski , he directed the contemporary music festival Musica Polonica Nova from 1984 to 1994 . Augustyn composed chamber music and orchestral works, electroacoustic and vocal music, ballet music and music for pantomimes. As a composer of drama music he worked with Konrad Swinarski , Tadeusz Łomnicki , Henryk Tomaszewski , Kazimierz Braun , Tadeusz Minc , Krzysztof Zaleski , Wiesław Hejno and Jerzy Bieluna and as a music advisor with Jerzy Jarocki and Grzegorz Jarzyna . He has received numerous prizes for his work, including the Gloria Artis Medal for cultural merit in bronze and silver.

In addition, Augustyn published literary and music reviews in specialist magazines, on radio and television. His translation of Charles Rosens Classic Style was published by Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne in 2014 .
