Raghu Rai ( Panjabi ਰਘੂ ਰਾਏ * 18th December 1942 in Jhang , Punjab , British India ) is an Indian photographer and photojournalist. He started his career in 1965 and became one of the most influential photographers in his country. For his life's work, he was awarded the Padma Shri (fourth highest Indian civil order) in 1972. As well as “Photographer of the Year” in 1992 for his work “Human Management of Wildlife in India”, which was published in National Geographic Magazine .

Life

Raghunath Rai Chowdhry was born in Jhang, Punjab Province, in 1942. At the age of 23 he devoted himself to photography in the 1960s after training as a civil engineer. He got his affinity for photography through his older brother, who was already an established photographer. He worked for The Statesman newspaper in New Delhi since 1966 . In 1976 he stopped working for this newspaper and worked as a freelancer. Henri Cartier-Bresson appointed him a member of the renowned Magnum Photos agency in 1977 . From 1982 to 1992, Rai worked for India Today magazine as the photography director. He became particularly well known for his photos of the Bhopal accident , which he documented on behalf of Greenpeace International . From 1990 to 1997 he was a member of the World Press Photo jury .

Rai lives and works in New Delhi. Solo exhibitions of his works were shown in 1997 and 2008 in the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi, in 2001 in Bunkamura in Tokyo and in 2004 in the Musei Capitolini in Rome . His photographs have also been shown in Milan in the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Milano , in the CoalMine photo gallery in Winterthur , in the Centro Cultural Recoleta in Buenos Aires , in the Leica Gallery in Prague and at the Rencontres d'Arles photo festival .
