Ragnar Harald Hoen (born October 5, 1940 in Oslo ; † July 6, 2019 ) was a Norwegian chess player and coach.

Life

Ragnar Hoen grew up in the Grünerløkka district of Oslo . Professionally, he was on the board of Tidemanns Tobakk in the Ensjø district of Oslo. He had a chess column in the Norwegian conservative daily Vårt Land and has also written for the Norwegian Chess Federation's newsletter , Norsk Sjakkblad. He was known by the nickname "The Old Blue Fox", which on the one hand respectfully refers to his 60-year chess career, on the other hand it alludes to his conservative political views, which he repeatedly voiced (the color of the conservative Norwegian party Høyre is blue) .

The Norwegian high jumper and European champion Steinar Hoen is his nephew.

successes

He won the Norwegian individual championship three times: 1963 in Moss , 1978 Risør and 1981 in Kirkenes . In the 1981 championship he was tied with three other players, but was the only one who accepted a rematch and won the championship. He won the Nordic individual championship in 1967 in Hanko , Finland . He won the Norwegian championship in blitz chess in 1980 and 1981. He won the Norwegian over 60 championship six times in a row between 2002 and 2007, not losing a single game in eight starts in the senior championships in the 2000s.

Hoen played club chess since he was 15 for the Oslo Schakselskap , with whom he won the Norwegian team championship 17 times.

For the Norwegian national team, Hoen took part in all twelve Chess Olympiads between 1960 and 1982 , although he never played on the top board. He was team captain at five other Chess Olympiads. In 159 games at the Olympics he had a positive result of 51 wins, 44 losses and 64 draws. He had his best individual result at an Olympics in 1962 in Varna , when he scored ten points in 16 games. In 1966 in Havana , Norway defeated with his help (he won against William Addison and Terje Wibe against Nicolas Rossolimo ) the United States with 2.5 to 1.5, which secured the final. He also took part with Norway in the 1989 European Team Championship and played in five Nordic Cups : 1970 on the top board, as well as 1972, 1977, 1985 and 1987. The Nordic Cup in 1987 in Słupsk , Poland , was Norway with Berge Østenstad on the top board and Hoen on the fourth board win.

Ragnar Hoen has held the title of FIDE Master since 1980 . He played his last Elo tournament game in July 2012 at the Norwegian Senior Championship in Sandefjord .
