Raimund III. (Toulouse)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Raimund III. Pons († after 961) from the family of the Raimundiner Count of Toulouse from 924 . He was the son of Count Raimund II and Gunhilde. In the chronicles he was called Regimundo Pontio , which is why he is also referred to as Pons I (and his grandson as Pons II ).

Life

Raimund competed with Duke Wilhelm II of Aquitaine for supremacy in Aquitaine and in 924 drove the Hungarians out of Provence . After the death of Duke Acfreds of Aquitaine (927) he claimed his inheritance against Count Ebalus Mancer of Poitou . Raimund managed at times to occupy the Auvergne , the Gévaudan and permanently the Gothic Mark ( Septimania ). He had the support of King Rudolf , whom he paid homage to in 932 and was formally entrusted with the Duchy of Aquitaine (Aquitanorum duce) and the Gothic mark. In the battle for Aquitaine, Raimund was inferior to his rival Wilhelm Werghaupt , who gained control of the Auvergne by 954, but was able to maintain his supremacy over the old Gothien as Gothorum principe . In 944, King Ludwig IV and Hugo Magnus confirmed his holdings to him. He was thereby feudal lord of the counties of Carcassonne and Razès and the vice counties of Albi , Béziers and Agde .

He founded the Chanteuges Monastery as early as 936 .
