William III. (Toulouse)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

William III. Taillefer († September 1037 ) from the House of Toulouse was Count of Toulouse , Albi and Quercy . He was the son of Raymond III. Pons († after 961) and Gersende.

He and his vassals were known for confiscating church property. What he took from Lézat Abbey he gave back between 1015 and 1025. Pope John XIX. (1024-1032) ordered him to stop the land grab in Moissac - a problem that was only solved by his son and successor Pons , who gave Moissac to Cluny Abbey .

Around 975 he married Arsinde von Anjou , daughter of Count Fulko II the Good ; with her he had two sons who both died young. In 1019 he married Emma von Provence , the daughter of Redbald III. , Count of Provence ; through her - after the death of her brother Wilhelm V - her eldest son Pons inherited the margraviate of Provence in addition to the county of Toulouse .

Wilhelm became the most powerful prince in western Languedoc . He held the title of marchio prefatus in pago Tholosano (margrave prefect in the country of Toulouse), and through the possession of his second wife, he expanded his influence to the Narbonensis and Provence . On the other hand, he had to accept a loss of power in his hometown of Toulouse , where he was forced by local nobles and clergy to forego taxes that he had imposed on the local market.

Children of Wilhelm III. were:

From the marriage with Arsinde von Anjou:

  1. Raimund, † young
