Rainer Buchmann (* 1960 in Dortmund ) is a German specialist dentist for periodontology , professor at the Medical Faculty of the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf and Professor Invitado at the Department of Oral Medicine and Periodontology at the University of Seville .

Life

Buchmann studied dentistry from 1979 to 1984 at the University of Münster and received his doctorate in 1985. As a specialist dentist for periodontics (1988), he has been teaching as senior physician at the Polyclinic for Periodontology at the University of Münster since 1996, after his habilitation in 1999 as acting head and interim director .

After a research stay until 2002 as an assistant professor at Boston University and Harvard Medical School in Boston , USA, he has been working in Düsseldorf since 2007 . Buchmann has been a special reviewer for the German Research Foundation (DFG) and a member of the scientific advisory board of the Journal of Periodontology since 2003 . Buchmann has two lectureships at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (since 2004) and the University of Seville (since 2010).

Buchmann has four daughters.

• 1987: 1st science award of the German Society for Periodontology (DGP) for his work on the assessment of wound healing after surgical periodontal treatment.
• 1992: 2nd DGP science award for the biology of the damping of implants and natural teeth.
• 1994: 1st science award of the DGP for his experiments on the clinical-immunological diagnosis of periodontitis.
• 1998: German Miller Prize of the German Society for Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine (DGZMK) for his habilitation thesis Clinical, biochemical and microbiological parameters for diagnosis and therapy control using the model of chronic and aggressive periodontal inflammation and periodontal regeneration .

research

Basic work in clinical research and bacteriology of periodontal disease and implant care was carried out in Münster. Further investigations dealt with the biochemistry of inflammation in periodontal diseases, immunobiology and enzyme regulation in the gingival exudate. Experimental research, funded by the National Institutes of Health , on leukocyte-mediated tissue injury (leukocyte-mediated tissue injury) and signal transduction in aggressive periodontal disease originated at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. Clinical studies on the relationship between medical periodontal treatment , patient health and quality of life were carried out in Düsseldorf.

Buchmann's research suggests that periodontal treatment contributes to the control of organ-related inflammation, a stabilization of the body's protective zones and the reduction of premature vascular aging. The relief of the body's defenses achieved through periodontal therapy is an important preventive medical measure before cardiological, cardiosurgical and endoprosthetic implantations. It thus makes a basic contribution to promoting general health.

The integration of medical implants requires early decision-making, three-dimensional planning and minimization of the procedure while maintaining the tissue perfusion . Long-term security requires a high level of protection against inflammation and hygiene, tissue volume and balanced exposure.

Social commitment to oral prevention with early detection and avoidance of general illnesses takes place in public events and self-help groups. Information about the connections between chronic diseases, aging and quality of life as well as the treatment of changes in the mouth and mucous membranes in cancer are central topics.
