Live and act

Rainer Hohberg grew up in Eisenach and studied there from 1968 to 1972 at the Institute for Teacher Training. After his first book was published in 1975, he studied from 1976 to 1979 at the "Johannes R. Becher" literature institute in Leipzig . He then worked in Jena as an editor of a series of city history publications. He has been a freelance writer since 1985, interrupted by teaching from 1990 to 1994. From 1984 he was a candidate, from 1989 until its dissolution he was a member of the GDR Writers' Association . Since 1990 he has been a member of the Thuringia District in the Association of German Writers (VS). He is a co-founder and board member of the Friedrich-Bödecker-Kreis Thuringia as well as a member of the Literary Society of Thuringia. As chairman of the Friends of Hummelshain Castle , he is committed to maintaining the historic castle ensemble in his home town of Hummelshain .

Hohberg writes radio plays, books for children and young people and books on Thuringian cultural history. For his first radio play "Die Mutprobe" (1984), which tells of political conflicts in Jena high school students during the National Socialist era, he received the children's radio play award of the GDR radio. A preferred genre is the fairy tale, whereby in the game with the miracle he repeatedly allows references to reality to shine through. In several books on the legendary landscape of Thuringia, he tries to explain the real background of historical legends. In addition, he writes regularly for daily newspapers such as the “Thüringer Allgemeine” and the “Ostthüringer Zeitung”. In 1990 Hohberg was the town clerk in Tübingen . In 1995, 2000 and 2008 he received literary grants from the state of Thuringia and in 2012 the honorary award of the Friedrich-Bödecker-Kreis Thuringia for his commitment to literary work with children. In 2017 he received a scholarship from the Thuringia Cultural Foundation.
