Rainer Sundmacher

Rainer Sundmacher (born January 9, 1943 in Gadebusch , Mecklenburg) is a German ophthalmologist. From 1986 until his retirement in 2006 he was Medical Director of the University Eye Clinic of the Medical Faculty of the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf .

Life

Sundmacher was born in Mecklenburg as the eldest of three brothers. From 1945 he grew up in Hanover, where he graduated from high school in 1962. He then did military service in the Bundeswehr, which he left in 1964 with the rank of lieutenant . From 1964 to 1969 he studied medicine at the universities in Berlin, Lübeck, Vienna and Göttingen. After graduating , he did his doctorate in the same year at the Max Planck Institute for Experimental Medicine in Göttingen under Friedrich Timm . In 1970 he passed the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). Also in 1970 he married Margarete Arnold. You have three children.

Until 1971 Sundmacher was the assistant of the virologist Rainer Thomssen at the hygiene institute of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen . He then switched to ophthalmology as a scientific assistant to Günter Mackensen at the Eye Clinic of the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg . There he passed his specialist examination in 1975 and completed his habilitation in 1977. In 1984 he was appointed C2 professor and senior physician in charge of the eye clinic. On November 17, 1986, he followed a call to the University of Düsseldorf as medical director of the eye clinic. At the end of March 2006 he retired.

Services

After Sundmacher dealt with the research of the hepatitis B virus and cellular immune reactions during his time in Göttingen , his main interest later lay in the research and treatment of diseases of the cornea of the eye. In the context of his scientific work, he concentrated in particular on the inflammation caused by herpes simplex viruses ( herpetic keratids ). As part of the treatment of these diseases, he transplanted over 3000 corneas ( keratoplasty ). During his management of the University Eye Clinic Düsseldorf , the Lions corneal bank was established there, which last examined and preserved over 630 transplants in 2008.
