Ralf-Peter Märtin (born October 6, 1951 in Eisenach ; † April 26, 2016 ) was a German historian, science journalist, non-fiction author and publishing manager.

Life

From 1973 to 1982 Märtin studied German , Ancient History and Southeast European History at the Technical University of Berlin and the Free University of Berlin ; this resulted in research stays in London, Ann Arbor (Michigan) and Bucharest. In 1982 he did his doctorate under Norbert Miller on the subject of Desired Potentials. History and Society in Adventure Fiction .

In 1984 Märtin began working as a non-fiction editor at Piper Verlag , Munich. He became program manager in 1987, publishing manager in 1989 and was program manager from 1992 to 1994. From 1995 to 1999 he worked as the managing director of the Beltz publishing group in Weinheim.

From 2000 he worked exclusively as a freelance journalist and non-fiction author (including a reporter for GEO , GEO Epoche, GEO Spezial, National Geographic Germany , Die Zeit and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung ) and was active as an author with a focus on history, archeology, alpine history and expeditions. In this capacity he was on the road in Bolivia, Peru, the Sahara, Namibia, Pakistan, Iran, India, Nepal, Tibet, Mongolia, Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Israel, Syria, Jordan. In Europe he researched with a focus on archeology ( Limes from Scotland to the Euphrates, Nebra Sky Disc , Varus Battle , Battle of the Harzhorn and the equestrian statues of Waldgirmes ).

From 2000 to 2005 he was also a lecturer at the University of Leipzig in the field of book studies . In 2005 he was a founding member of the German Society for the History of Sports Science , Cologne. In this context there were numerous scientific publications on Alpine cultural history.

From 2011 to 2012, as a Senior Fellow of the TOPOI Cluster of Excellence , Berlin, he wrote the volume of the exhibition Beyond the Horizon. Space and knowledge in the cultures of the Old World ( Konrad Theiss Verlag ).

Märtin's books are considered standard works: Dracula has been continuously available for 30 years, the Varus Battle (Fischer) a bestseller, Nanga Parbat (Malik) a standard work in alpine history. He made numerous trips with Reinhold Messner , who u. a. found their expression in the joint effort Meine heiligen Berge (Ullstein).
