Ralf Metzenmacher (born July 26, 1964 in Aachen ; † August 3, 2020 ) was a German painter and designer .

Life

Metzenmacher studied object and product design with a focus on painting and drawing at the Aachen University of Applied Sciences from 1986 to 1991 under Christiane Maether and Ulf Hegewald. From 1991 to 2004 he worked as a designer at Puma AG . Most recently, he was the director responsible for the areas of Footwear Europe and Accessories International . Metzenmacher - like Michael Michalsky at adidas - successfully relaunched older Puma products with a " retro look". He was instrumental in the restructuring of the sports goods manufacturer into an international sporting lifestyle - brand involved. Since 2004 he has been working as a freelance artist. He lived and worked in Bamberg .

Metzenmacher died in August 2020 after a long bike tour in Thuringia.

painting

Metzenmacher has been painting since the early 1980s. During his studies and in addition to his work as a designer, he painted numerous genre scenes and still lifes , which are documented in the book "Die Another Welt" ( self-published ). He saw himself as a representative and so-called “pioneer” of retro art painting : a synthesis / combination of art and design . Metzenmacher's surreal retro art also sees itself as a “revitalization” of 17th century still life painting and as a “further development” of Pop Art .

Metzenmacher's work appears silent and surrealistic. Individual objects are depicted with disciplined drawing precision. They are taken from the natural environment, stand individually or in an artificially arranged context that is surrounded by unreal space. The luminous, high-contrast coloring alienates the materiality of the objects and irritates the viewer. A frame is indispensable for every picture that imitates the style of the past.

The brothers Kai and Thorsten Wingenfelder , founders of the rock band Fury in the Slaughterhouse , composed and produced the appropriate “visual music” for five paintings by Ralf Metzenmacher.

In the picture cycle “A Journey into the Sham Holy Land”, Metzenmacher dealt with the themes of religion, politics and power.
