Ralph Houk (born August 9, 1919 in Lawrence , Kansas , † July 21, 2010 in Winter Haven , Florida ) was an American baseball player and manager of Major League Baseball . His nickname was Major .
biography
As early as 1939, Ralph Houk was hired by the New York Yankees in the amateur draft , and his career in the major leagues did not begin until 1947 after the end of his military service. At the beginning of the season he played 41 games with a respectable batting average, but with the signing of Yogi Berra as catcher , Houk spent most of his career in the minor leagues . For the Yankees, he played only 50 more games as a substitute for Yogi Berra in the following seven years.
He then began his career as a manager, first in the minor leagues, then as a coach with the Yankees. In 1961 he took over the managerial position of Casey Stengel . In 1961 and 1962 he won the World Series with the Yankees , and in 1963 the American League title . After a hapless interlude as vice president and general manager of the Yankees, he took over the managerial post of the team again until 1973. Further positions with the Detroit Tigers and the Boston Red Sox followed. On September 25, 1984, he announced his retirement at the end of the 1984 season. One curiosity is that Houk was never fired at his manager stations.
In November 1986, the Minnesota Twins named him vice president of their organization, and with the help of his good advice, the Twins won the 1987 World Series.
