Ralph Keuning (born December 20, 1961 in Harderwijk, the Netherlands ) is an art historian and has been director of the Museum de Fundatie in Zwolle since 2007 .

Professional career

Keuning studied art history at the University of Utrecht and wrote his thesis on the German Dadaist John Heartfield . From 1990 to 1992 he worked as an assistant at the Neue Nationalgalerie and in the Kupferstichkabinett Berlin . Then he worked at the Kröller-Müller Museum . In 2004 he moved to Lelystad and became the first director of the Nieuw Land Center for Cultural Heritage Museum.

Keuning has been director of the Museum de Fundatie in Zwolle since 2007. The museum also includes Kasteel het Nijenhuis, located between Wijhe and Heino . The expansion of the museum was designed by Hubert-Jan Henket and implemented under the direction of Keuning. On May 31, 2013, it was officially opened by Princess Beatrix . He expanded the collection with works by Jan Fabre , Marc Chagall , John Heartfield, Karel Appel and some works of art by Jan Cremer , whose work La Guerre Japonaise is worth mentioning. In 2010 he presented the painting by Vincent van Gogh , the Le Blute fin mill, discovered through research at the Van Gogh Museum . In 2014, in collaboration with the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, a still life from the Fundatie collection was assigned to the artist Jan Lievens .

Keuning is one of the museum directors who emphasize confrontation in their exhibitions. He is of the opinion that art is not just art, but has to express a certain point of view.
