Ralph Lewin (politician)

Ralph Lewin (born May 21, 1953 in Basel ; resident in Basel and Neckertal ) is a Swiss politician ( SP ) and economist . From 1997 to 2008 he was a member of the government council of the Canton of Basel-Stadt , and from 2010 to 2017 Lewin was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Bank Coop (now Bank Cler ).

education and profession

Lewin studied sociology and economics at the University of Basel from 1972 to 1977 and completed internships in Maribor and The Hague . From 1977 to 1980 he was an assistant specializing in economic policy at the University of Basel, and in 1981 he received his doctorate. rer. pole. From 1981 to 1984 he was a research assistant at the Swiss National Bank (SNB). From 1984 to 1986 Lewin was a member of the Swiss delegation to the OECD . From 1986 to 1997 he was President of the Association of Public Health Insurance Companies in Switzerland, Director of the Basel Public Health Insurance Fund (ÖKK) and then Chairman of the Board of Directors. From 2009 to 2011 he was President of the Board of Trustees of the successor organization Sympany . From 2010 to 2017 he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of what was then Bank Coop. He is also a member of the Bank Council of Basler Kantonalbank (majority shareholder of Bank Coop), President of the Swiss Association for Shipping and Port Management (SVS) and JM Jüdische Medien AG (publisher of the weekly newspaper tachles ). He is a board member of the University Psychiatric Clinics Basel (UPK).

Ralph Lewin joined the SP in 1978. In 1995 he became a member of the party executive of the SP Basel-Stadt. In December 1996 Lewin was elected to the Basel government council, in 2000 and 2004 he was confirmed in office. He headed the Economic and Social Department (from 2007: Department for Economic, Social and Environmental Affairs ). Lewin was district president in 2000 and 2005. In the 2008 government council elections, he and party member Barbara Schneider no longer stood. Hans-Peter Wessels and Christoph Brutschin were elected as successors .

Private

Lewin is married and has two children (* 1981, * 1985).
