Ramadan Darwish

Ramadan Darwish ( Arabic رمضان درويش, DMG Ramaḍān Darwīš ; * January 29, 1988 in al-Gharbiyya Governorate ) is an Egyptian judoka . The 2009 World Cup third-placed won the African Games in 2019.

Athletic career

The 1.88 m tall Ramadan Darwish fights in the light heavyweight division, the weight class up to 100 kilograms. In 2009 he won the African Championships in Mauritius , in the final he defeated the Algerian Hassene Azzoune . Two months later he won the final of the Mediterranean Games in Pescara against the Frenchman Cyrille Maret . At the World Championships in Rotterdam he was defeated in the quarterfinals by the Dutchman Henk Grol . About the hope round he reached the battle for bronze and won against Elmar Qasımov from Azerbaijan. In 2010 Darwish defeated the Cameroonian Franck Moussima in the final of the African Championships in Yaoundé . At the World Championships in Tokyo he was eliminated in the round of 16 against the Uzbeks Oʻtkir Qurbonov .

In 2011 Darwish won the final at the African Championships in Dakar against the Tunisian Anis Ben Khaled . At the 2011 World Championships in Paris he reached the semifinals with a victory over the Georgian Lewan Schorscholiani . After defeats to Kazakhs Maxim Rakow and the second Georgian Irakli Zirekidze , Darwish finished fifth. At the Africa Games 2011 in Maputo Darwish lost in the final to Franck Moussima. In 2012 he won the final of the African Championships in Agadir against the Algerian Lyes Bouyacoub . At the 2012 Olympic Games in London, Darwish retired in his opening match against Frenchman Thierry Fabre .

In 2013 Darwish won the final of the African Championships in Maputo again against Lyes Bouyacoub and won his fifth title in a row. At the Mediterranean Games in Mersin he won as in 2009, this time he defeated Amel Mekić from Bosnia-Herzegovina in the final . At the World Championships in Rio de Janeiro he lost to the Japanese Takashi Ono in his opening fight . In 2014 he lost to Lyes Bouyacoub in the final of the African Championships in Port Louis . At the World Championships in Chelyabinsk he lost in his second fight against the Belgian Toma Nikiforov .

Lyes Bouyacoub also won the final against Darwish at the 2015 African Championships in Libreville. A year later, the two met again in the final of the 2016 African Championships in Tunis and this time Darwish won. At the Olympic tournament in Rio de Janeiro, Darwish reached the quarter-finals and finished in seventh place after losing to Elmar Qasımov from Azerbaijan and the German Karl-Richard Frey .

In 2017 Lyes Bouyacoub and Ramadan Darwish met for the sixth time in a row in the final of the African Championships , the Algerian won the tournament in Antananarivo. In the fall of 2017, Darwish won the title at the World Police Games. In 2018 Darwish won the final of the African Championships in Tunis against Bouyacoub. At the 2018 Mediterranean Games in Tarragona , Darwish won the final against Italian Giuliano Loporchio , winning his third title in a row. At the 2018 World Championships in Baku, he lost to the Georgian Warlam Liparteliani in the quarter-finals . After a victory in the hope round against the Portuguese Jorge Fonseca, the Egyptian lost in the battle for bronze to the Russian Nijas Ilyasov . In 2019 Darwish lost to Bouyacoub in the final of the African Championships in Cape Town . Four months later, Darwish faced Moroccan Mohammed Lahboub in the final of the Africa Games in Rabat and won the title. At the 2019 World Championships in Tokyo , Darwish was eliminated in his second fight against Frenchman Cyrille Maret.
