Random is a five-piece Australian R&B band from Brisbane . In 2005 she won the first season of the Australian talent show The X Factor .

Band history

Xy Latu and Jesse Tolo-Paepae first appeared as solo singers in their hometown Brisbane nightclubs and competed in singing competitions. When they met for the second time on such an occasion in 2002, they decided to make music together under the name Rough Diamonds . Latu started singing as a teenager, Tolo-Paepae is the son of a pastor and sang in church as a youth. The musical roots of the brothers TJ and Wayne Tauvao and their cousin Donald also lie in Sunday church singing. They later formed the R&B trio 315 . Both groups have in common that they were allowed to appear in 2004 at a performance by K-Ci & JoJo in Brisbane in the opening act.

When the British casting show format The X Factor was due to start on Network Ten in Australia in 2005 , the Rough Diamonds and TJ Tauvao, who originally wanted to compete alone, applied. While they were waiting to take part, they decided to play as a five-piece band under the name Random . You were accepted as one of the five candidates in the category music group for the competition and surely survived all rounds up to the final. There they finally prevailed against Russell Gooley as the winner.

In the finale, they sang the song Put Your Hands Up , which was subsequently released by Sony BMG and reached the top ten on the Australian charts. Then they were allowed to go on tour through Australia and New Zealand as a support act with Boyz II Men . They recorded their debut album with the band name as the title, which was released on October 10, 2005. While the pre-release single Are You Ready came in at number 36, the album missed the top 50 of the charts. For Random there were no more successes after that and The X Factor was also canceled at least for the following years because the quota expectations had not been met.
