Cyrus Villanueva (born June 20, 1996 in Wollongong ) is an Australian pop singer who emerged as the winner of the casting show X Factor Australia in 2015 .

Career

Cyrus Villanueva learned to sing and play the guitar from his father, an immigrant from the Philippines who was himself a full-time musician. He first performed under the name Jo Vill in Victoria before moving to the city ​​of Wollongong south of Sydney , where Cyrus was born in 1996. As a teenager he supported his father and ended up performing himself as a street musician, in cafes and at weddings.

After graduating from high school, he successfully applied to X Factor in 2015 . The coach of his group was the US musician Chris Isaak . His song Wicked Game already had a hit during the show: It reached number 1 on the iTunes charts and number 6 on the Australian single charts . Further songs were placed in the expanded top 100 of the charts. He finally reached the final as a favorite and prevailed there against the competition. With his winning song Stone from the final broadcast, he then reached number 4 in the official charts and achieved gold status.

As the winner, Villanueva was entitled to a record deal with Sony Music . The album Cyrus was released there at the end of the year . It debuted at number 9 on the charts and was also awarded gold. In 2016 he released two more singles that also hit the charts, including the duet Hurt Anymore with 2012 X-Factor winner Samantha Jade .
