Attractions
Like the Mondulkiri province to the south, Ratanakiri is 80% inhabited by 21 minorities with different languages and cultures. The best known are the Charai, Kaco, Tampuan, Kreung and Brau. There are also numerous Laotians, Vietnamese and Chinese. The province is attractive for tourists. A few kilometers outside the provincial capital Banlung you can already find dense forests. Rubber plantations that were planted by the French in the 1960s are also cultivated here.
- Yaklaom is a legendary lake of volcanic origin about three kilometers southeast of the capital, approaching Vietnam.
- Waterfalls: They are one of the main attractions in the province. Cha Ong is an 18 meter high waterfall in the middle of the jungle, as is the 10 meter high Ka Tieng . Also Kan Chang is a popular waterfall.
- Visitors can visit the minority villages themselves. However, special attractions, such as traditional cemeteries (such as in the village of Ka Choan ), can only be entered in the company of a local guide who will obtain the approval of the village elder.
- Semi-precious stones are mined in several places . The zircon mines are the best-known mining area accessible to visitors, also known as the three-district mining area . Hundreds of 60 cm wide and 12 meter deep holes have been driven into the earth here.
- Elephant Trekking: These animals occur in the wild in Ratanakiri, but are also used by the minorities for slash and burn. Trekking tours can be undertaken with some of these elephants.
