The old town hall stands on the market square of Hildburghausen . The representative town hall is the seat of the local government and the meeting place of the city ​​council in the citizens' hall. As the administrative center , it houses several municipal authorities such as the library , the tourist information and the registry office .

history

The core of the town hall contains the remainder of the so-called stone house, which was built in the 13th century and was first documented by sources in 1325. It was a feudal bower that burned down in 1388 and was then left to the city to build a town hall. Construction began in 1395 and was completed in 1417. After it was partially destroyed by a storm in 1572, it was poorly restored. In 1594 a new building was built using the outer walls of the old building. In the 19th and 20th centuries, numerous internal and external renovations took place, especially in the area of ​​the ground floor . This contained the bread and meat banks until 1862 and had four entrances. In 1945 the town hall was partially destroyed. In 1951 the exterior was renovated. During the renovation of the house, which began in 1995, priority was given to the preservation of historical findings. Its aim was to restore the building fabric and the room layout from 1595 true to the original . The until 1919 inhabited dwelling of the watchman was prepared as in the original.

Building description

The three-story plastered building was given its present form in the Renaissance style in 1595 . The building has a steep gable roof . To the south it has a three-storey volute gable . On the west side there is a four-storey round stair tower with a double curved hood , which is crowned by an open lantern . The roof turret contains the tower clock and is covered with a hood and lantern. On the portal are arched eleven small arms of the guilds and the iron Elle attached to the posts, at the most important trade in the medieval city that textile industry recalls. The overlying parapet of the windows is adorned with the city ​​coat of arms and the large state coat of arms of Saxony from 1595.
