Michael Heinz Rautenberg (born February 14, 1968 in Hanau ), known as Rautie , is a German comic artist, painter, animator, commercial artist and DJ.

Career

Already at the age of ten Rautenberg, whom Mareike Geringswald called "master of the stickmen" in the Frankfurter Rundschau , wanted to become a comic artist. In his teens, his friends called him "Rowdy" because of his excessive dancing style. He changed the name to Rautie and kept this name as a stage name to this day.

In addition to comic artists like Hergé and Jacques Tardi , punk in particular had a great influence on him. He tried to implement the attitude and music of punk in his comics.

From 1989 to 1995 Rautie was a member of the band Kaktuxxe . He was not active there as a musician, but as a "visual artist". During the band's rehearsals, he made drawings that were projected onto the stage at live concerts. He also designed the artwork for the band's releases.

In 1990 Rautie founded with friends, u. a. Frank "Frunk" Sander and the brothers Carsten "Raul" and Torsten "Tvuzk" Kauke , who played bass and guitar with the Kaktuxxen , the Hanau city magazine Banane , where he published his comics for the first time. With the last issue of this magazine, a comic book in Piccolo format with the title KiX appeared in December 1990 . From April 1991 the KiX Piccolo booklet appeared regularly in a total of 29 issues until 1995. They contained comics by Rautie, the Kauke brothers, Jörg Ritter, Nicolas Kaiser and other cartoonists.

With copywriter Raul, Rautie created the comic series Willy the Kid . The Willy the Kid comic strips have been published weekly in the Hanauer Anzeiger since 1996 . The two artists also made various animated Willy-the-Kid video clips. Several issues and two anthologies of the series have appeared so far. In 2019 the booklet Willy the Kid # 25: Everything in the Green Area was awarded the ICOM Independent Comic Prize as the best short comic at the Munich Comic Festival.

In 2000 Rauties comic strip Heinz and Pifie: Nanu ragout from cans at Comic Salon Erlangen with the ICOM Independent Comic Price named best comic.

Again with Raul, Rautie created the Rappelrübe family series , which has been published regularly in the Offenbach family magazine Rappel-Post since 2002 . The Rappelrübe stories were also published weekly in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung from 2015 to 2016 . An anthology was also published by the Rappelrübe family .

In 2004 he made the music video for the song Beende Deine Jugend for the Boxhamsters .

In 2009 he took 2nd place in the cartoon and comic competition Europe and Citizenship of the European Union. In the same year he made a music video for the song Escalator Down for the band Superstolk .

Between 2011 and 2014, Rautie illustrated various board and card games for the game publisher Mücke Spiele . He also designed the Pöppel family webcomic series for the publisher .

In 2011, Rautie created an animated music video for the song Drugstore Girl by the singer-songwriter Reverend Schulzz . In 2017 Schulzz released the CD In the Land of the One Eyed Cat . Rautie was inspired to create a painting from each of the ten songs on the CD and also painted the cover. A 24-page booklet was included with the CD, which contained the lyrics by Schulzz and the pictures by Rautie. The images were exhibited at the CD release party and also appeared in a portfolio with twelve art prints. Also in 2017, Rautie designed the cover and booklet of the CD Canciones Serias para Noches Tristes by the band Jonny Hates Rock around the Hanau author and musician Robsie Richter .

In the same year he self-published the first edition of the Hanau city magazine Tinnitussi, which he illustrated . The magazine was created in collaboration with the Hanau author Norman Schlimmer and others.

Since the late 1990s, his paintings, most of which he creates in acrylic on canvas, have been shown in various exhibitions. For example, in 1999 in the Hessian Puppet Museum , in 2013 in the Weserburg Museum of Modern Art in Bremen or in 2015 on the Day of the Cemetery at the Hanau Main Cemetery .

Rautie designs and sells a whole range of different merchandising products such as T-shirts. Backpacks, breakfast boards, and cider temples. He mainly markets his comics, pictures, textiles and collectibles himself. He sells his products in Rauties Art Kiosk , a mobile sales booth with which he travels to parties and festivals. He occasionally runs pop-up stores in Hanau under the same name . He runs an internet shop called Rauties Internet Kiosk .

He has published an unmanageable number of different postcards and buttons. He also sells his buttons via the so-called Rautomat . These are chewing gum machines that you can pull the buttons on, but also comics or products from your merchandising program.

Rautie regularly offers various comic and art workshops on behalf of the Hanau youth education center. Likewise at the Hanau Adult Education Center.

On behalf of various private and public bodies, he designs vehicles with comic motifs. For example, in 2011 a city bus called Märchenexpress operated by the Main-Kinzig roundabout company, which commutes between Frankfurt and Hanau. In 2012, the Rietze Automodelle company produced a model of the Märchenexpress in scale H0 (1:87), which is distributed by Schuco .

Rautie, a collector of vinyl records, is also a regular DJ. In various venues he plays Songs for the Deaf and Ahoi! mainly punk rock as well as music from different branches of independent and alternative rock.

Biographical and personal life

Rautenberg was born in Hanau and lives there with his wife and two sons to this day. He attended the Brothers Grimm School and then went to the Otto Hahn School in Hanau, where he graduated from secondary school. He completed an apprenticeship as a commercial artist.
