Raymond O'Hurley

Raymond Joseph Michael O'Hurley PC (born October 1, 1909 in Saint-Gilles , Québec - † March 27, 1970 ) was a Canadian politician of the Progressive Conservative Party (PC) who was mayor of Saint-Gilles between 1938 and 1957 , was a member of the House of Commons for nearly six years and served as Minister of Defense Production in the 18th Canadian Cabinet of Prime Minister John Diefenbaker between 1958 and 1963 .

Life

O'Hurley, a road construction worker by profession, began his political career in local politics and was mayor of the parish of his native Saint-Gilles between 1938 and 1957. In addition, from 1950 to 1958 he was head of the county of Lotbinière , to which Saint-Gilles belongs as a district.

In the election of June 10, 1957 , he was elected as a candidate for the progressive conservative party in the Lotbinière constituency for the first time as a member of the House of Commons and was a member of this until his defeat in the general election of April 8, 1963 . In the general election of April 8, 1963, he was defeated by his challenger from the Liberal Party , Auguste Choquette , who received 6,957 votes, while he received only 5,449 votes.

Shortly after the election, O'Hurley was on August 7, 1957 Parliamentary Assistant to the then Ministers for Mining and Technical Assessment, first to Léon Balcer and then to Paul Comtois . On May 12, 1958, he was appointed to the 18th Cabinet by Prime Minister John Diefenbaker as part of a cabinet reshuffle, where he was Minister of Defense Production until the end of Diefenbaker's tenure on April 21, 1963.

In the election of November 8, 1965 , O'Hurley ran again in the Lotbinière constituency for re-entry into the House of Commons, but suffered another defeat against the now constituency holder Auguste Choquette, who this time received 6,238 votes, while he came to 5,160 votes. He then finally withdrew from political life.
