Raymond de Saussure

Raymond de Saussure (born August 2, 1894 in Genthod , † October 29, 1971 in Geneva ) was a Swiss psychoanalyst .

Life

The son of the linguist Ferdinand de Saussure studied literature and philosophy. Under the influence of his father-in-law Théodore Flournoy , he turned to medicine and psychology. In 1919 he was one of the founders of the Swiss Society for Psychoanalysis . In 1920 he published a summary of the entire French psychoanalytic literature in the first issue of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis . De Saussure was analyzed by Sigmund Freud , first in 1920 or 1921 for six months. He then wrote the book La méthode psychanalytique , with which he received his doctorate from the University of Geneva in 1922 . In 1927/28 he was involved in founding the Société psychanalytique de Paris . In Berlin it was analyzed by Franz Alexander . In 1937 de Saussure settled in Paris, where he was analyzed by Rudolph Loewenstein for more than two years . Back in Switzerland, he worked in a leading position at the Prangins psychiatric clinic . From 1940 (or 1941) to 1952 he lived in New York , where he came into contact with ego psychology and worked as a training analyst . In 1952 he returned to Geneva and became an important organizer of psychoanalysis in French-speaking Switzerland . From 1961 to 1967 he was President of the Swiss Society for Psychoanalysis.
