Rebeka Masarova ( Slovak : Rebeka Masárová; born August 6, 1999 in Basel ) is a Swiss- born tennis player who has competed for Spain since 2018.

Life

Her father came to Switzerland with his parents from Czechoslovakia as a child in 1968. Her mother Marivi is Spanish. She speaks Slovak in the family and also has a Spanish passport. Masarova also speaks Spanish, Catalan and English, she lived in Barcelona for five years.

Career

Masarova, whose role model is Roger Federer , started playing tennis at the age of five and prefers hard courts. She mainly plays in tournaments of the ITF Women's Circuit , so far she has won two singles and three doubles titles. She competed in her first tournament in October 2013 in Sant Cugat del Vallès, Spain .

In 2016 she reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open in the juniors and won the French Open of juniors.

When she took part in a WTA tournament for the first time in July 2016 in Gstaad , she reached the semi-finals after victories over Jelena Janković (then No. 27 in the world), Anett Kontaveit (No. 92) and Annika Beck (No. 38). It then improved to 314th place in the world rankings.

In January 2017 she reached the final of the Australian Open with the juniors , which she lost to Marta Kostjuk 5-7, 6-1, 4-6.

She has been eligible to play for Spain since 2018, and differences with Swiss Tennis were mentioned in the press as the reason for the association change .
