The West African Football Academy (WAFA) is a football academy from the Ghanaian city of Sogakope .

history

In 2006 Red Bull took over an existing soccer school called Soccer School of Lavanttal in Sogakope, which at the time belonged to Dietmar Riegler (current president of Wolfsberger AC and owner of RZ Pellets), an Austrian businessman. This was followed by the construction of a new stadium with a capacity of 1000 spectators and two more artificial turf pitches. The promotion to the second highest Ghanaian soccer league, Division League One , was celebrated in 2009. In the first year in Ghana's second-highest division, the first team reached fifth place. In 2011, they came in fifth again, and sixth in 2012, before being relegated to third division in 2014 with eighth place. In summer 2013, Red Bull closed the academy again. Gérard Houllier , Global Sports Director for the Red Bull football clubs, justified this step with, among other things, "mistakes in local management" and mistakes in the choice of location. In August 2014 it became known that the academy was newly founded under the name "West African Football Academy" in cooperation with the former "Fetteh Feyenoord" and that there is still an "intensive technical and content-related cooperation" with Red Bull.

The first graduate of this program was Felix Adjei in 2010 , who joined the second team at FC Red Bull Salzburg . A school with six classrooms and several residential buildings for a total of up to 80 people were available for the young players.
