Red Hook is a village in Dutchess County , New York , United States . In the United States Census 2010 , the place had 1961 inhabitants. It belongs to the Metropolitan Statistical Area Poughkeepsie - Newburgh - Middletown . The name is derived from the Dutch expression Roode Hoeck , which means something like red peninsula and alludes to the bright red color of the leaves in autumn.

The Village of Red Hook is located within the Town of Red Hook on US Highway 9 and should not be confused with the Red Hook neighborhood in Brooklyn .

The region was part of the Schuyler patent. The St. Paul's (Zion's) Evangelical Lutheran Church , the Elmendorph Inn and Halfway Diner , now Village Dinner in the National Register of Historic Places entered.
