The main region Mostviertel is one of the main regions (five "quarters") of the spatial planning of Lower Austria and is organized in the regional association noewest-mostviertel , the association of the municipalities and municipal associations of these municipalities, the Leader regions and other regionally important representatives. The association was founded in the course of joining the EU in 1994. Since 2015, the association's operational work has been transferred to the newly created NÖ.Regional.GmbH of the state, in which the regional association holds 6%, with the Lower Austrian Village and Urban Renewal Association of all municipalities as a partner.
Despite its name, the region only corresponds to the western part of the traditional Mostviertel , without the parts around St. Pölten, which form the main part of the newly created fifth main regions of Lower Austria Central (Lower Austria Central Area), but with those belonging to the Melk district, to the south into the Danube Valley oriented communities of the Waldviertel .
This main region of Mostviertel includes:
- Districts Amstetten , Scheibbs , statutory city Waidhofen an der Ybbs
- as well as the district of Melk without the communities of Melk , Emmersdorf and Schönbühel-Aggsbach (Lower Austria-Mitte)

- Ostarrichi Mostland (10, 7 municipalities)
- Alpine (49, 6 municipalities)
- Schallaburg (50, 2 municipalities)
- Donau-Ybbsfeld (52, 7 municipalities)
- Mostviertel origin (53, 8 communities)
- Großes Erlauftal (70, 2 municipalities)
- Ecoregion Südliches Waldviertel (13, 12 municipalities) belongs to the main region Mostviertel
- Horse country Voralpen (11, 7 municipalities) with Puchenstuben and ARGE Dunkelsteinerwald (18, 7 municipalities) with Dunkelsteinerwald belong to Lower Central Lower Austria except for these two municipalities
In the Lower Austria nature conservation concept, the main region is divided into the regions
- 23 Strudengau, Ostrong and Hiesberg
- 24 Western Alpine foothills
- 25 Western flysch zone
- 26 Western Limestone Alps
The Natura 2000 areas in Lower Austria are each completely assigned to one of the five main regions of the state development concept and processed in a structured manner according to a uniform scheme. The following European protected areas exist in the main region of Mostviertel:

- Machland South
- Lower Austrian Alpine Foreland Rivers & Pielach Valley
