Regnault de Chartres

Regnault de Chartres (also Renault, Renaud and Regnaut , * around 1380 in Ons-en-Bray , † April 8, 1444 in Tours ) was the archbishop of Reims who crowned Charles VII as King of France .

Life

He was the son of Hector de Chartres, lord of Lyons-en-Beauvaisis and Enquêteur des eaux et des forêts in Normandy and Picardy , and Blanche de Nesle; through his mother he was the half-brother of Guillaume de Flavy .

Regnault studied civil law and was doyen (dean) in Beauvais in 1404 , later trainee lawyer for the Pope and president of the Court of Auditors ( Chambre des comptes ). He was the chamberlain (today's name Camerlengo ) of the antipope John XXIII. (1410-1415). In 1414 he was appointed Archbishop of Reims and in this office he played an important role at the Council of Constance (1414-1418).

In 1418 he became one of the advisors to Dauphin Karl, who later became King Charles VII, and was one of his most effective diplomats. 1425 he became the party of the Armagnacs to Chancellor of France raised. In 1429 he crowned Charles VII as king in Reims. In 1431 he was the royal governor of Champagne . He led the negotiations with the Burgundians and later the English and represented Charles VII in 1435 in the negotiations for the Treaty of Arras (1435) .

In 1432 he refused to be appointed Archbishop of Embrun . In 1436 he was appointed Bishop of Agde and in 1439 Bishop of Orléans . In the consistory of December 18, 1439 he was elevated to cardinal by Pope Eugene IV .

He died in 1444 a few days before his appointment as Bishop of Mende .
