Rein Wolfs (* 1960 in Hoorn , Netherlands ) is a Dutch art historian , exhibition curator and director of the Stedelijk Museum since December 1, 2019. Until the end of November 2019, Wolfs was director of the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundeskunsthalle) .

Life

Rein Wolfs is the founding director of the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Zurich , where he worked from 1996 to 2001. In 1996 he dedicated his first major exhibitions to Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone and the Scottish artist Douglas Gordon . In 2002 he became exhibition director at the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam and in 2003 he became curator of the Dutch pavilion at the Venice Biennale .

From 2007 to 2012 he was artistic director of the Kunsthalle Fridericianum in Kassel .

After a search committee had looked for a successor for the directorship of the art and exhibition hall of the Federal Republic of Germany, gave. Minister of State for Culture Bernd Neumann announced on January 17, 2013 that Wolfs would take office on March 1, 2013. State Minister for Culture Monika Grütters extended his contract to 2023 in 2017.

Under his leadership, the Bundeskunsthalle was able to record one of the busiest years in its history with 610,000 visitors to exhibitions and events.

Rein Wolfs is active on various boards and commissions, among other things as a member of the art purchase commission of the Federal Collection , the art and exhibition committee of the Foreign Office , which u. a. suggests the curator for the German appearance at the next Venice Biennale to the Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Kuratorium der Kunststiftung NRW , the Kuratorium Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain . as well as the program advisory board of Gropius Bau Berlin and the supervisory board of the Arp Museum Rolandseck .

Wolfs also writes articles for magazines, newspapers and catalogs and was editor of the Swiss art magazine “Material”.

Exhibitions (selection)

Rein Wolfs was responsible for numerous exhibitions in the Bundeskunsthalle, including retrospectives on the work of Kasimir Malewitsch , Hanne Darboven , Katharina Sieverding and Marina Abramović , large shows with John Bock and Gregor Schneider, as well as an overview exhibition by fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld and the first comprehensive exhibition on Pina Bausch and the dance theater. In 2017, the house under Rein Wolfs u. a. a large archaeological exhibition on Iran, an extensive retrospective on Ferdinand Hodler , an exhibition combining science and art on the subject of weather and climate (under the auspices of the UN Climate Secretariat ) and an internationally recognized exhibition on Nazi-looted art and its consequences based on the Schwabinger inventory Art finds . In 2020 in the Bundeskunsthalle under his responsibility u. a. the big anniversary exhibition on Ludwig van Beethoven takes place.

The Dutch pavilion he curated at the 50th Venice Biennale was entitled “We Are The World” and featured works by Carlos Amorales, Alicia Framis, Erik van Lieshout and Meschac Gaba .
