Biennale di Venezia 2003

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 50th Biennale di Venezia took place from June 15 to November 2, 2003 and had the main theme "Dreams and Conflicts - The Dictatorship of the Viewer". Under the artistic direction of Francesco Bonami , who was born in Florence and lives in the USA , the exhibition comprised ten partial exhibitions in the Arsenale and the Giardini. The partial exhibitions were conceived and designed by different curators, including two exhibitions by Bonami himself. The Biennale was actually supposed to tie in with Documenta 11 by Okwui Enwezor and also be regarded as trend-setting. Francesco Bonami wanted to get rid of the dusty image of the previous biennials by announcing a generation change into the new millennium.

The Biennale di Venezia 2003 is one of 54 art biennials, international art exhibitions (as of 2014) that have taken place in Venice every two years since 1895.

Italian pavilion: "Delays and Revolutions"

With the topic and title: “Delays and Revolutions”, in German Delays and Revolutions, writes in the catalog Daniel Birnbaum , who is jointly responsible for this exhibition alongside Francesco Bonami: “Too early, too late. The temporality of art is never linear. It is characterized by repetition and syncopation, detours and delays. ”The exhibition finds good evidence of this, but it is sometimes completely wrong. One of the works that corresponded particularly well to the theme and completely submitted to the context of the exhibition was the video installation entitled: "Opposing Mirrors" by Dan Graham . Another important feature of the exhibition was the document with the work title: “L'immagine non riporta la didascalia”, by the Italian artist Massimo Grimaldi, on the outer wall of the main pavilion. The textual content of the work of art begins with the sentences “Art survives as a caricature. Its charm lies in its insignificance. ”And ends with:“ Art is not about the possibility of human expression, but about their conditioning. ”

Arsenals

Exhibition theme “Clandestine”, curated by Francesco Bonami

The exhibition could not be entered through the usual main entrance; visitors to the Arsenale were led into the exhibition rooms through a side entrance. The reasons for such a detour can only be guessed at. One of the first works in this part of the exhibition was the lettering by Sam Durant with the text, "See you next August in Chicago". A direct reference to the other individual works, which are presented in almost closed rooms, is not necessarily given. A central highlight has been dispensed with and the impression is created that the context of this exhibition is deliberately distributed among the individual works shown. The interactive video installation with the work title: "Villar" by Eva Koch can unfold well through the additional walls in other rooms and shows the family history of Cristobalina from different perspectives, which extends over large parts of Europe and ends in a common European dramaturgy. The “secretly hidden” (clandestine) of the exhibition certainly relates to the large number of works hidden in intentionally nested rooms, which provided an essential aspect of this partial exhibition.

Artists and their works in the Arsenale: Sam Durant , Jaan Toomik , Amelie von Wulffen , Thompson Cheyney , Eva Koch , Colin Darke , Aida Ruilova , Liu Zheng , Enrico David , Magnus von Plessens , Doron Solomons , Sizuka Yakomizo , Laura Maria May , Hanna Greely , Mircea Cantor , Harkan Gursoytrak , Flavio Favelli , Nobuko Tsuchiya , Paulina Olowska , Monika Sonowska , Avner Ben Gal , Michael Helfman , Tatian Trouve , Dana Schutz , Ghazel , Bojan Sarcevic , Dryden Goodwin , Jorge Queiroz , Andreas Dem , Anushka Kalenowska , Etti Abergel , Francisco Tropa

Exhibition theme: Fault Lines - Art from Africa: “Fault Lines”, curated by Gilan Tawadros

When a tectonic plate moves, one can closely observe the fault lines of a rift. "Fault Lines" is the name of the 2003 Biennale, the show curated by Gilan Tawadros on "Contemporary African Art and Shifting Landscapes".

Artists in the Arsenale: Moshekwa Langa , Frank Bowling , Rotimi Fani-Kay-Ode , Hassan Fathy , Samita Benjahia , Laylah Ali , Kader Attia , Wael Shawky , Sabah Naim , Zarina Bhimji , Salem Mekuria , Noataz Nasr , Clifford Charles

Exhibition theme: Individual Systems - "Individual Systems", curated by Igor Zabel.

The exhibition “Individual Systems” curated by Igor Zabel within the 50th Venice Biennale on the topic “Dreams and Conflicts: The Dictatorship of the Viewer” is an attempt to answer this question about “politically active art”. For Igor Zabel, the answer lies clearly in an autonomous art or in an artistic autonomy, which, however, takes a reflective, critical position on the world around it through an inherent self-reference and external reference (Luhmann). For “Individual Systems” 15 artistic positions were put together that deal with the concept of the system.

Artists in the Arsenale: Simon Starling , Miladen Stilinovic , Josef Dabernig , Andre Schilling , Viktor Alimpiev , Marko Peljhan , Roman Opalka , Florian Pumhösl , Luisa Lambri , Pavel Mrkus , Miriam Eisach , Yuri Leiderman , Nahum Tevet , Andrei Monastirski , artist group IRWIN

Exhibition theme: Zone of Urgency - “Zone of Urgency”, curated by Hou Hanru

The issue of urgency is derived directly from urban space by Hou Hanru , urbanization and the expansion of urban space require quick answers that should not be left to the political level alone. Global competition, economy would always have priority in this case, but answers that are only immanent in art would also not be a sufficient solution.

Artists in the Arsenale: Sora Kim & Gimhongsoh , Surasi Kusolwong , Alfredo Juan Aquilizan & Maria Isabel Aquilizan , Heri Dono , Adel Abdessened , Gu Dexin , Shulea Cheang , Huang Yong Ping , Atelier Bow-Wow & Momoya Kaijima , Wong Hoycheong , Joo Jae- Hwan , Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba , Yan Pei-Ming , Tadaso Takamine

Exhibition theme: The Structure of Survival - “The Structure of Survival”, curated by Carlos Basualdo

Basualdo's main theme is the phenomenon of the crisis of an unpredictable situation based on social relationships. The curator's intention is not necessarily and exclusively on socially engaged art that produces measurable results of an imminent change. Rather, it is about the autonomy of the subject. A small highlight are undoubtedly the works of Helio Oiticica, which can be found a little apart in an inconspicuous hall.

Artists in the Arsenale: Rachel Harrison , Pedro Reyes , Robert Smithson , Paola di Bello & Armin Linke , Olumuyiwa Olamide Osifuye , Jeebesh Bagchi , Monica Narula , Carolina Caycedo Sanchez , Hélio Oiticica , Koo Jeong-A , Ferunda Gomes , Yona Friedman , Alexandre da Cunha , Dolores Zinny / Juan Maidagan , Gertrud Goldschmidt , Mikael Levin , Meyer Vaisman , Marcos Reis Peixoto , Antonio Ole , Jose Antonio Herandez-Dietz , Özge Acykkol , Andreas Siekmann , Alice Creisher

Exhibition theme: Contemporary Arab Representations - “Contemporary Arab Representations”, curated by Catherine David

The exhibition is reduced to a total of six projections which are reflected on four screens, a book on the subject and a book corner. The curator understands this presentation less as an outright “exhibition”, but more as a project of projects to which the participating authors have contributed various works. The media reduction is very intentional and in a special way also justified because the exhibition project is reflected in it.

Artists in the Arsenale: The Atlas Group / Walid Raad , Taysir Batnij i , Tony Chakar , Bilal Khbeiz , Randa Shaath , Paola Yacoub / Michel Lasserre

Exhibition theme: “Utopia Station”, curated by Molly Nesbit, Hans Ulrich Obrist and Rirkrit Tiravanija

The French artist group “Amicale de Temoins” initiated in the garden of the Utopia Station, in a corner of the Arsenale, barking dogs, which is supposed to represent an invasion of reality into utopia. Similar to the last Documenta (11), this project has also been moved to the last position on the exhibition route in order to avoid major irritations for the audience. Christoph Schlingensief's 'Church of Fear', an ironic ray of light in the Utopia garden, shows the audience a small wooden church with the “representative idea”, which already had Jesus Christ carry the cross.

Artists and their works in the Arsenale: Angela Bulloch , Ingar Dragset / Michael Elmgreen , Liam Gillick , Hans Peter Feldmann , Agnès Varda , Michelangelo Pistoletto , Pash Buzari / Olafur Eliasson , Manfred Pernice / Sean Snyder , Yoko Ono , Tacita Dean , Atelier van Lieshout , Franz West , Leif Elggren , Tobias Rehberger , Christoph Schlingensief , Alicia Framis

Exhibition theme: "The Everyday Altered", curated by Gabriel Orozco

An everyday life of sensations shows itself as a paradoxical something that finds itself again beyond what is visible. When we call something a “work of art” it is nothing more than a comprehensive, sometimes complex configuration of signs. Every single observer is able to combine these signs in his own way. Each combination can mean something different, and yet there are similarities and parallels. A sense that can in no way be separated from what is felt.

Artists in the Arsenale: Damián Ortega , Jean Luc Moulene , Abraham Cruzvillegas , Fernando Ortega , Daniel Guzman
