Reinhard Dieter Schulz (born July 22, 1935 in Posen , Poland; † May 1, 2018 ) was a German pediatric radiologist and is considered one of the pioneers of pediatric ultrasound diagnostics.

Life

Reinhard Schulz grew up with three other brothers in the small town of Rakwitz, southwest of Posen. In 1945 the family initially fled to Uelzen , where he attended school. After moving again, he graduated from high school in Hanover in 1956 . His father was a pastor and church musician and his mother was an alto. Although he grew up with music like his brothers, he decided to study medicine. After studying in Berlin , Göttingen and Freiburg , he passed the state examination in 1962 and received his doctorate in 1963 with the dissertation: "Mitosis index and mitosis phase distribution in the bone marrow in acute leukemia " at the Free University of Berlin. In 1965 he began radiology training at the Johanniter Hospital in Rheinhausen . After moving to the University Children's Hospital in Düsseldorf , he became a specialist in paediatrics under the direction of Gustav-Adolf von Harnack and took over the management of the children's radiology department . Schulz moved to the municipal children's clinic in Stuttgart in 1971 , also became a radiological specialist and took over the management of children's radiology. After the restructuring of the Stuttgart clinics, he headed the department for ultrasound diagnostics and special radiology of the Radiological Institute at the Stuttgart Clinic (Olgahospital) from 1979 until the end of his professional career in 1998 .

Reinhard Schulz began ultrasound diagnostics in children as early as 1975. Teaching and continuing medical education were particularly important to him. From 1978 onwards he conducted regular ultrasound courses for many years, which were attended by numerous paediatricians, pediatric radiologists, pediatric surgeons and orthopedists. He was the lead editor of the training recommendations of the Pediatric Section of DEGUM . In 1986 he initiated the biannual children's radiology meeting in 4 countries (Austria, eastern France, Switzerland and southern Germany). He was an honorary member of the Pediatric Radiology Society .

Together with F. Niemann, he is considered to be the first to describe congenital microgastria .

Besides medicine, music was an essential part of his life. After violin and piano , he came to his actual instrument, the flute , at the age of 18 . His teachers included: Aurèle Nicolet and Gustav Scheck in Freiburg and Gaby Pas-Van Riet [1] in Stuttgart. From 1967 he was a member of the orchestra of German paediatricians for 20 years. In 1979 he founded the Ensemble Medici, which consisted of himself and four other members of this orchestra. After his retirement, Schulz moved to Bochum and started the Kemnader Burgserenaden there.
