Gustav-Adolf von Harnack

Gustav-Adolf Paul Waldemar von Harnack (born January 31, 1917 in Hindenburg , Upper Silesia , † July 13, 2010 in Hamburg ) was a German pediatrician .

Life

Gustav-Adolf von Harnack was the eldest son of the social democratic politician Ernst von Harnack (1888-1945), who was sentenced to death by the People's Court and executed on March 5, 1945 in Berlin , and Anna Wiggert (1894-1960). His grandfather was the theologian and general director of the Prussian State Library Adolf von Harnack (1851–1930), his great-great-grandfather the chemist Justus von Liebig (1803–1873).

After graduating from high school in Berlin in 1936, von Harnack began studying medicine in Freiburg , Berlin and Innsbruck in 1938 , which he completed in 1942 with a state examination and doctorate. He then did military service as a military doctor in France. After the release from British captivity, from 1945 a specialist training as a pediatrician at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf followed . In 1952 he completed his habilitation and became a private lecturer at the University of Hamburg . In 1959 he was appointed an adjunct professor. In 1966 he was appointed professor of paediatrics and director of the university children's clinic at the University of Düsseldorf . In the academic year 1975/76 he was dean of the medical faculty.

His scientific and clinical work focused on social paediatrics and the drug treatment of children as well as the prevention and treatment of polio and congenital hypothyroidism . His textbook on paediatrics and his “pediatric dose tables” are considered standard works.

In 1982 he retired . Since 2006 he lived in the Elbschloss-Residenz in Hamburg.

Harnack married on December 15, 1942 in Freiburg im Breisgau the doctor Ursula Walther (born March 6, 1921 in Göttingen), daughter of the sociology professor Dr. phil. Andreas Walther and Ella Gustav. The couple has one son and three daughters. Professor von Harnack died on July 13, 2010 at the age of 93.
