Reinhard Koerner

Reinhard Koerner (born June 27, 1926 in Apolda ; † April 23, 1987 in Berlin ) was a German epigraphist .

Life

Reinhard Koerner, son of the student adviser and later geography professor Fritz Koerner (1893-1959), attended high school in Jena and in 1944 passed the secondary school diploma . After a short military training he was retired and was able to begin his studies at the University of Jena in the winter semester of 1944/1945 . He studied history, geography and German , but switched to classical philology in 1945 . With Karl Barwick , Koerner wrote his dissertation on the Dialogus de oratoribus in 1950 . The decisive factor for Koerner was his acquaintance with Friedrich Zucker , who introduced Koerner to papyrology and epigraphy and supported his further career.

After a brief activity as a study inspector at the student dormitory of the Thuringian regional church in Eisenach, Koerner was employed in 1952 at the Academy of Sciences in Berlin , where he worked at the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum . In 1954 he switched to the Inscriptiones Graecae project , which was headed by Günther Klaffenbach .

In addition to working at the academy, Koerner also carried out independent scientific research. His focus was on the history of Greco-Roman Egypt, for which inscriptions and papyri provided valuable source material. 1957 Koerner in Jena Friedrich sugar was a thesis on the historian Polybius doctorate . In 1970 he received his PhD B (Dr. sc. Phil.) With a thesis on the ancient water supply of the Greeks. Since then he has dealt intensively with the law and administration of the early Greek poleis .

After Friedrich Zucker died in 1969, Koerner joined the editorial team of the Archives for Papyrus Research and Related Areas . There he took over the "related areas" as co-editor, especially epigraphy.

Reinhard Koerner died on April 23, 1987 after a short, serious illness. He was buried in the cemetery of the Kaulsdorf village church. From his estate, his colleague Klaus Hallof published the monograph Inscribed Legal Texts of the Early Greek Polis .
