Brandstätter  grew up in Linz , where he also graduated. He completed his medical studies in Graz and Vienna. He was involved in social causes all his life, as a middle school student for the Youth Red Cross , as a student in the anti-nuclear movement . As early as 1979 he took part in the first meeting that led to the founding of HOSI Vienna (Homosexual Initiative Vienna). At the constituent general assembly in January 1980 he was elected vice chairman. From 1983 to 1991 he was chairman of this first Austrian lesbian and gay organization, then its honorary chairman. He shaped the work of HOSI for a decade, was active as a panelist and political lobbyist, initiated a number of projects and supported numerous activities.

In 1983 Reinhardt Brandstätter initiated the first AIDS information brochure for gay men in Europe in collaboration with the Vienna Working Group for Public Health , university professors Christian Kunz , Klaus Wolff and Alois Stacher , and psychiatrist Walter Dekan . In 1984/85 he founded the first major study in Europe on the prevalence of HIV antibodies in gay men. In 1985 he, who worked in the Ministry of Health, initiated the establishment of the Austrian AIDS Aid (ÖAH) together with the dermatologist Judith Hutterer , but left the founding chairmanship to an official of the Federal Ministry of Health , Helga Habich. Brandstätter became 2nd President, Hutterer 3rd President of the new organization. The ÖAH published the first information brochures with a print run of 40,000 in September 1985. In November 1985, the first counseling center opened in Vienna; between 1986 and 1987, six more followed in Graz, Bregenz , Innsbruck , Salzburg , Klagenfurt and Linz. The aim of the ÖAH was from the beginning to involve the entire population in the education and counseling work and to create a contact point for all groups of the population despite special, target group-specific campaigns. ”Brandstätter was the head of the first AIDS counseling center.

Reinhardt Brandstätter died after a long illness from the consequences of HIV and AIDS. His partner from 1979 onwards was the HOSI Vienna activist Kurt Krickler , who also stood by his side over the past few days.
