Reinhold Hohl

Reinhold Daniel Hohl (born July 6, 1929 in Zurich ; † August 9, 2014 in Rheinfelden ) was a Swiss art historian .

life and work

Reinhold Hohl came from a family from the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden . He published his first essay in Weltwoche at the age of 21 . On December 1, 1950, his article on Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation ("Residential City") appeared in Marseille . He was then able to study art history. He published in newspapers and magazines. From 1951 to 1954, Hohl studied at the Sorbonne in Paris and graduated with a License en lettres in the subjects of art history and psychology. In 1961 he received his doctorate from the University of Basel .

Hohl was a lecturer at the Chair of Art History at the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at ETH Zurich , where he was in charge of the graphic collection from 1983 to 1991 . From 1983 he built up the area of American printmaking , starting with Walasse Tings One cent life , and subsequently acquired Andy Warhol's Electric Chair from 1971 as well as sheets by John Baldessari , John Cage and James Lee Byars . In 1989, Hohl curated the first exhibition of American prints in the graphic collection, which was dedicated to the American minimalist Richard Serra . In 1988, Hohl became adjunct professor at ETH Zurich. In 1994 he retired .

Hohl was an art journalist and published numerous works on ancient and modern art. He was considered an expert on the life and work of Alberto Giacometti , about whom he published several publications. He was also known as a specialist in Giacometti forgeries.

Hohl was a member of the International Art Critics Association Section Switzerland (AICA).
