Charles Sulpice Jules Chanoine
Charles Sulpice Jules Chanoine (born December 18, 1835 in Dijon ( Côte-d'Or ), † January 9, 1915 in Baudement ( Marne )) was a French military officer who served the first French military mission in 1867 and 1868 Japan directed in support of the shogunate . He later became French Minister of War.
biography
Chanoine was the commander of French troops in China during the Second Opium War from 1856 to 1860. At the instigation of the 14th Shogun Tokugawa Iemochi , he was from Napoleon III. appointed commander of the first French military mission in Japan. Jules Brunet was among the officers of the first French military mission . After the defeat of the shogunate in the Boshin War , Chanoine had to leave Japan together with the majority of his subordinates in October 1868 on the instructions of Emperor Meiji .
Under Prime Minister Henri Brisson , Chanoine became French Minister of War in 1898 after Generals Godefroy Cavaignac and Émile Zurlinden had to resign due to the Dreyfus affair . Like his predecessors, Chanoine tried to prevent a new investigation into the Dreyfus case against the will of the rest of the government cabinet. This led to the resignation of the entire cabinet on November 1, 1898.
